چکیده

Introduction Brain therapy with transcranial focused ultrasound is a scientific and technological challenge [1,2]. A novel prototype is presented here (SuperSonic Imagine, France), working at the highest frequency envisioned currently for transcranial brain treatment (1MHz). A non invasive time-reversal focusing technique based on CT scans is performed for that purpose [3]. Such a brain therapy device operating at 1MHz should be particularly suited for well defined targets such as metastases and essential tremors. Thanks to the ability of MR to provide temperature maps with a good accuracy every few seconds, ultrasonic ablation of tissues has been implemented clinically and used successfully for the treatment of uterine fibroids [4]. The aim of this study was twofold. The first goal was to check if the new prototype was fully MR-compatible. The second aim was to heat a PVA-gel, and ex vivo brain tissues, directly or through a human skull. The changes in temperature were monitored with MRI.

PET and MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery for hypoxic-tissue ablation combined with radiotherapy in solid tumors

Background: The rationale was to develop an ablation approach to destroy regions of tumor resistant to radiation and thus reduce the time required for whole tumor ablation, while improving overall tumor control after radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: The system is composed of a micro positron emission tomography (mPET), 7T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and a customized MRI-compatible foc...

Numerical Study for Optimizing Parameters of High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound-Induced Thermal Field during Liver Tumor Ablation: HIFU Simulator

Introduction High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is considered a noninvasive and effective technique for tumor ablation. Frequency and acoustic power are the most effective parameters for temperature distribution and the extent of tissue damage. The aim of this study was to optimize the operating transducer parameters such as frequency and input power in order to acquire suitable temperatu...

Sonalleve MR-HIFU with DISC Philips MR-guided High Intensity Focused Ultrasound with Direct Skin Cooling

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound guided by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (also known as MR-guided HIFU, MRgHIFU, or MRgFUS) is a therapy technique which uses focused ultrasound waves to heat and coagulate tissue deep inside the body without damaging intervening tissue and offers an novel, non-invasive treatment option for solid tumors. The Philips Sonalleve MR-HIFU system, initially released in 2...

The relationship of T2WI signal intensity of uterine fibroids and the temperature curve in MR-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation

Background/introduction MR guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation is increasingly being used worldwide to treat symptomatic uterine fibroids because of its excellent therapeutic efficacy in controlling symptoms and its excellent safety record. High signal intensity on T2WI MR images of fibroids is firstly considered a factor that induces poor ablation outcomes. Nevertheless, t...

Preliminary clinical results: MR-HIFU Ablation of uterine fibroids with automatic volumetric ablation

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) allows non invasive treatment of uterine fibroids without anaesthesia and a fast return to normal activity [1]. For this thermotherapy procedure, MR guidance provides anatomical images to plan treatment of the fibroid, thermal maps to quantify the HIFU heating and contrast enhanced images to measure the induced nonperfused volume. This routine clinical p...
